The Douro Superior Wine Festival returns to EXPOCÔA - Vila Nova de Foz Côa Exhibition Center, on May 24th, 25th and 26th, with around 100 exhibitors this year. The program for the 11th edition of the event includes, in addition to the renowned Douro Superior Wine Competition, commented wine and olive oil tastings, a colloquium and displays of regional products from Douro, Trás os Montes and Beira Interior.

 

The opening of the Douro Superior Wine Festival is scheduled for 6pm on Friday, May 24th, with the presence of the Mayor of Foz Côa, João Paulo Sousa. On this first day, visitors will be able to attend a commented tasting of the “Great whites of the Douro Superior”, by Luís Lopes, critic and editor of Grandes Escolhas magazine, as well as a show by fado singer Sara Correia (22h00).

On Saturday 25th, the highlight will be the Douro Superior Wine Competition, which brings together some of the country's most important critics and other wine professionals in the morning and, this year for the first time, importers from Italy, the UK, Denmark and Sweden. Every year, high-quality wines from large, medium-sized and, above all, small producers, which might otherwise go unnoticed, take part in this competition.

The fair opens its doors to the general public at 3pm, with two tastings reserved for this day: one on “Olive oils from the Douro Superior and Trás-os-Montes”, by Francisco Pavão, President of the Association of Producers in Integrated Protection of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (APPITAD), and another on “Great red wines from Douro Superior”, by critic Fernando Melo. António Zambujo closes the evening with a concert at 22h00.

The last day of the event will see the announcement of the results of the 11th Douro Superior Wine Competition and the last commented tasting, this time on “Port Wine”, by Valéria Zeferino. To complement the program of activities, visitors to the festival will be able to taste and buy the various wines and local products in the exhibitors' area, where there are also taverns with different gastronomic options.

 

The Douro Superior Wine Festival has contributed to affirming the identity of the Douro Superior and every year has seen a significant increase in exhibitors, as a result of the growth and interest of producers from other regions who have been settling in the region. From 24 to 26 May, another edition of the event will be held to showcase the work carried out in the region, organized by Foz Côa Municipal Council and Grandes Escolhas magazine.
