The Fladgate Partnership expands its portfolio with the acquisition of Quinta do Portal

28 March 2024

The Fladgate Partnership (TFP) has taken a significant step forward in the world of still wines from Douro by acquiring Quinta do Portal, a renowned company specializing in the production of wines from the region. This strategic move not only expands TFP's portfolio, but also strengthens its international presence through its still wine division, Fladgate Still & Sparkling Wines.

The transaction includes Quinta do Portal, Confradeiro and Abelheira, a total of 53 hectares, winery and ageing warehouse designed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, along with stocks, the boutique hotel Casa das Pipas and the restaurant.

TFP is positioning itself with an even wider range of quality wines. This complements its recent expansion into other segments, such as Vinho Verde, Dão and Bairrada, following the acquisition of IdealDrinks in September 2023.

Quinta do Portal, renowned for decades for producing high-quality table wines, has had the technical support of renowned winemaker Pascal Chatonnet since 1992, the same man who oversees Fladgate Still & Sparkling Wines.

Adrian Bridge, CEO of TFP, emphasizes that this acquisition reinforces the company's commitment to excellence in the production of Portuguese wines, both still and Port.  "This quinta is a jewel in the heart of Douro. Its location, altitude and relief that allows mechanization are exceptional for the production of table wines," he adds.

The company, owner of Taylor's Croft and Fonseca, which has been working in Douro focused exclusively on Port, is now extending its offer to the region's still wines.

TFP demonstrates its flexibility and vision for the future, continuing to be a leading figure in the world of wine. With over three centuries of history, significant sales and a dedicated team, the company reaffirms its commitment to excellence and innovation in the wine industry.
